Chapter 8: Ashes to Eternity
The sharp scent of smoke hit Penelope as she rounded the corner, her heart dropping at the sight of her townhouse engulfed in flames. Flames licked hungrily at the windows, roaring against the night. Then she saw him—her boyfriend inside, battling the inferno with a fire extinguisher, sweat pouring down his face as he shouted orders she couldn’t hear.
“Get out of there!” Penelope screamed, sprinting toward the house. The thick smoke curled, choking the air. He turned, their eyes locking in a brief moment, before he motioned for her to stay back. But Penelope rushed in.
The heat was overwhelming, a fiery wall between them, forcing them apart. As the extinguisher sputtered out, he yelled, “Stay back!” and bolted toward the exit. The unrelenting flames followed, engulfing him. Penelope screamed as he stumbled into the yard, flames consuming his shirt. She reached him as he collapsed, frantically patting the fire out, her voice cracking, “Stay with me!”
But then Death appeared, its skeletal hand extending toward him.
“No!” she cried.
His last whisper was, “I love you,” before his spirit stilled—then flickered into ghostly light beside her.
What they couldn’t have in life, they found in death.
The photos of her boyfriend fighting the fire show how large and strong the fire was that engulfed her home! He was brave to try to put it out! It was sad that he passed away. It is good though that he has come back as a ghost.
"Thank you for noticing the intensity of those moments—it really was a massive and devastating fire. He showed incredible bravery trying to fight it, and his loss was heartbreaking. Having him return as a ghost has been bittersweet, but it’s comforting to know he’s still around in some way. It does make me wonder, though, with a hint of mystery—could their babies possibly be part ghost?"
