help with floor plan:

Hi all,

I need some suggestions on the first floor on this mansion I'm building. I would like some thoughts on where to put the kitchen, formal dining room, formal living room, other rooms in the house and bathrooms. its quite big and I think Im going to struggle with it. Here is a blank slate of the layout of the first floor as shown. If some experienced builder can help me that would be great.

  • Hello
For the empty rooms, you could have a sauna room, or a meditation /yoga room. There could be a study and library room. Perhaps a bar room? There could be an inside conservatory/plants room or a sunroom. There could be a painting and woodworking art room. These are just suggestions :)
  • @kquinn1990 that is quite a lot of space to work with haha. It is hard to say without actually starting to place walls and see how it feels, however I can try to offer some general advice. I'm also prone to building shells without defined areas whereas some people like to build from the specific rooms outward and let them structure the outside. So I know how weird and challenging it can be to define the spaces afterward haha.

For starters you could enlarge the entrance foyer a bit, it is a huge house and a grand entrance hall is often the style. You could even create double stairs and maybe delete the ceiling between the first and second floor to create a 2 story entrance hall with multi level stairs. The area behind that could be a small decadent hallway as usually the entrance areas where guests often see are usually more lavish than other areas. From that hallway you could go to I would say either a formal living room, dining room, informal living room or general entertaining space which would be like a formal living room but with maybe a bar and more seating. There could also be a small parlour bathroom connecting to the main entrance hall after the foyer.

On the wing with the dining room could connect to a large kitchen. You could also try breaking the rigid symmetry of the house with something like an octagonal room in one of the 4 rectangular corners for a small breakfast nook in the kitchen. On this wing could also go a room for a single stairwell and a bathroom adjoining the kitchen. The formal living room or entertaining area should likely be on this wing as well connecting to the dining room. I imagine the kitchen could go all the way at the end with the formal living room and dining room closer to the main entrance, and the formal living room connecting to all the doors leading to the backyard. You could start with a grand piano somewhere, either in a nook off the main hallway or even in the entrance hall or hallway itself. Connecting to the formal living room or dining room could be a sitting room with a game table where sims could retire after dining.

On the other wing could be the informal living room. This could go off the main hallway. Connecting to this could be a library and a personal study. Adjoining either of these could be another bathroom. Towards the end could go another stairwell to the upper floor. On this wing you could also consider a well lit outdoorsy sitting room where you could have large windows and even remove the floor to use terrain paints to allow stone and grass and natural rather than potted plants. Another space on this wing could be a guestbedroom, which could connect to at least the informal living room and one of the doors leading outside to the backyard. Basically this wing would be more for your own sims family and the other for entertaining guests.

Each wing could also have a separate hallway further in to connect all the individual rooms. In the upper floors would be the bedrooms and likely another study or library and another living room right after the main stairwell, although it could be more like a living room giant hallway that is in the same space as the stairwell.

Anyway sorry if any of that sounds confusing haha, difficult to describe what I'm imagining for the floor plan.

  • This is an update on the house, Im not sure what to put in the rooms that are empty. The tiled room is a banquet room, but besides those I have a few left and have no idea what to do with them. Any suggestions would be great.
