Thanks @AzukiMochi ?. Ikkanu was in fact grown in a lab artificially from the DNA of ancient mermaids, in an experiment to fuse mermadic powers with that of Spellcasters.
The experiment was conducted out at sea on board a vessel, which was stormed by conservationists who found out about the experiments. In the process, baby Ikkanu accidentally got tossed overboard into the deep ocean.
He washed up on Mua Pel'am. The island spirits residing there foresaw his potential and chose him to be the next island shaman, bringing him back to life and raising him in the ways of the islands.
