Legacy Challenge rules and inheritance procedures

I'm currently participating in the Legacy Challenge.

The rules state that an heir can inherit either upon the death of the head of the family or when the heir becomes a young adult, but does this have to be consistent across all generations during the challenge?

Also, when it comes to inheriting, do I have to select a special command in the game rather than just thinking about it in my head?
