Yeah I often felt like that too, it's a really all consuming feeling that I've only begun to let go of in adulthood. It's so hard to sit by and watch everybody else be confident and carry on as though they're not thinking about what others think about them when for you even something like holding an umbrella is embarrassing haha.

Yes! I get a little tired of pretty girls being called out for being shallow in lit. It's for sure the case often in real life, but not always! Some of my most beautiful friends are the most humble and kind and I'm struck by how often people automatically assume that they'll be mean girls when they meet them. I'm also glad that the sadness of it being one of their last summers comes across because that was really the dominant feeling in my mind when I wrote it - that sense of 'we have to make the most of this time'.
