“Who were you talking to over there?” Mike asked.
“Just one of the groomsmen. Why?” I replied.
“Who is he?”
“I don’t know, he’s a friend of the groom.”
“Well, you looked pretty comfortable.”
“So? He’s seems a nice enough person, easy to talk to.”
“What did you talk about?”
“Why does it matter? Lots of things. Kelly said he helped them with their invitations, name tags etc. He’s a graphic designer apparently. Why am I getting the second degree from you? Just because you barely talk to anyone. I like to actually talk with people, you know that.” I breathed out heavily and glared at Mike. “I’m going to sit down at the table the first course has arrived.”
I walked off and Michael followed. After that, I felt like he was eyeballing me all night and I couldn’t relax for the rest of the evening. He drank more than he usually did and we hardly talked, yet many others chatted to us separately. At one point Mike tried to start up a conversation with me but the discussion ended along the same lines. Who was I talking to? What did you say? The green-eyed monster reared its ugly head over and over.
We had booked the same hotel as the bride and groom and so did several other guests. When we arrived in our room, there was a beautiful brass ice bucket with champagne. All the guests that stayed there for the wedding, received one from the hotel manager. I had looked forward to a lovely evening sipping champagne and enjoying the spa we had in our room, the night lights and being together, but not everything went as planned.
As soon as we got back to the room, Mike poured the bubbly into the glasses and we talked and I thought all was going well.
“It was a lovely wedding, wasn’t it?” I said.
“Yes it was, but I still wish you’d have talked to me a bit more.” Mike took a mouthful of bubbly. He had already had plenty and began being all morose. “I don’t know what I would do if you found someone else,” he said.
“For God sake, Mike, we have been going out for three years now, if I wanted to see someone else, don’t you think I would have been out of here by now?”
“You might meet someone else sometime.”
“That’s why you are so against me going to university isn’t it? It all makes sense now.”
“Well you might.”
“Boy what about trust, you know damn well that I’m a social person, if you can’t handle me simply talking or mixing with other people you’ll have to find someone that bends to your every whim, or go out with a robot, because I am not like that and if you can’t accept me as I am there is not a lot of hope for us.”
“But I love you.”
“If you loved me you would understand where I’m coming from.”
“I do it’s just—“
“No, Mike, just nothing, I’m going to bed.” I stormed into the bathroom and slammed the door, changed and then came out and jumped into bed. “This could have been a really nice night, you’ve ruined everything now.”
In the middle of the night, I felt Mike move up and put his arm around me. I was awake anyway but didn’t let him know that. He rubbed my back and snuggled in.
“I’m really sorry,” he whispered.
I broke out in goose bumps when I felt his warm breath on the back of my neck.
“You are just so…so beautiful, anyone would want you and I worry that one day you’ll find someone better,” he continued.
I turned to face him and we hugged firmly.
“I love you, not anyone else, I just like talking to different people, and it’s just the way I am. It doesn’t mean I’ll take off with them.” The rest of the night was spent in each other’s arms.
There were still moments of jealousy particularly whilst I attended university, but things improved over time. After all we were both young and still discovering our identity.
Spoiler
I didn't like the view through the window but wanted to show it as it fitted into my story, so I changed it to blend in with the room
