My Decades Challenge

1930 to 1934...

Wow, the 30s have gone quiet slow for me. Not sure if its due to managing the 1st generation households, building lots decade appropriate, updating everyone's dress, etc... There is so much prep for this challenge. And guess what, I'm loving every minute I can spend playing it.

1930...

Walt and Lady had their death rolls, sadly they both passed away and are now resting peacefully at the family grave. They made it to 15 years.

1931...

Not much happened in, except everyone lost their jobs due to the bank's crashing. Oh, Lewis and Frank became adults.

First hit was Ruth's family with Paul losing his job. He was a department head at the university. Luckily they had enough saved up but everyone lost 40% of their income.

Since the University was having to down size significantly, both Frank and Nellie lost their teaching jobs.

Nate lost his job at the hospital and Anna had to shut down the clinic. They moved into a smaller home but it was still quiet luxurious. Anna tried to help as many as possible and even opened up a clinic at home.

Lewis had to pull the fishing boat, he couldn't afford its maintenance for the time being. They even lost power to the home for a bit.

With everyone out of work and things looking bleak, the family gathered together for one big pot luck Thanksgiving.

1932...
As if 1931 wasn't bad enough, at the first of the year Carolina had her death roll. She lived to be 60.

Bomber also had his death roll, but luckily he lives another year. This pup is like a cat, 9 lives. But momma Anna is a vet and she takes care of her baby.

Mary saw the troubles her family was having. With so many living in the home she decided to leave. She didn't tell anyone and left just after Christmas.

Donald ages up. They didn't really have much and couldn't make a cake, but they celebrated as best they could. Plus things just weren't the same without Mary there. William spent his times searching for her nearly everyday.

Mary was ok. She had jumped trains like most teens were doing these days. Made her way to the city. Like so many others she stayed in the Hooverville. There were families with small children, old crazy ladies, men who had lost their jobs and deserted their families. But Mary made the best of it she could. The old Crazy Lady set her up under bridgeway into the Hooverville. They actually became great friends and Mary tended to the gardens and helped teach kids that were unable to attend school. Those in the area would gather together most nights to eat as everyone had to pretty much share food in order to survive they would make pot dinners.

In the meantime Nellie didn't let the Depression keep her down. As soon as Prohibition was lifted she went out, all out.

Dorothy becomes a Young adult. She takes to visiting everyone when she can and sending letters and cards. She goes to see Lewis and his family most often. Playing chess with John and helping with the toddlers.

Nellie ages up to an adult. Frank throws her a little get together at the house, but as soon as the party dies down Nellie takes off to party with her mates. She over does it and WooHoo's with her club member, who also has a family. Unbeknownst to her, Lewis was had also appeared at the club.

Ruth's family spend a lot of their time outside the home. They visit family time to time.

Mary works selling produce from the garden on the street. She also gets by foraging. On one of her excursions she gets seen by a young man named Connor. He takes to her and they start to hang out more often. Connor lost both his parents and had to go stay with his aunt and her husband in the city. Their apartment isn't that far from the Hooverville. He tells her about how abusive and mean his uncle can be since losing everything back in 1929. She tells him of her family's troubles and how she ended up where she is. He invites her to eat every now and then and a little romance begins to blossom.

Things are definitely getting interesting with this family. There is for sure no lack of drama. Frances family is actually doing quiet well. Since Max is a gardener he was able to maintain work by offering his expertise to those who didn't know how to grow their own food. With the scarcity of goods his farm blossomed and grew even bigger. Anna, while still reeling from the loss of her clinic she was able to do a lot of good helping people out with their pets and opening a clinic in her home. Nate was actually enjoying the time away from the hospital and spending more time with his family. He even followed in his wife's footsteps and offered home services, but only to those who were in need. Ruth was devastated with Mary's departure. She worried everyday and still worries. Paul has yet to find work and funds are getting low for their big family. We will see if Lewis can ever get his boat back in the water as they are also low on funds that they may not be able to pay the next bill without a miracle. And Frank, well Frank was finally able to find a teaching job at the local high school. It was a huge step down from teaching at the University but at least it was work. Nellie has yet to tell him about her affair, but she doesn't know Lewis saw her that night either.
