Yes the synonyms option is brilliant, but it has to make sense as some words although they mean the same thing don't always suit the context of what you are writing, so be careful there.
For example encounter means meet, come across, bump into, stumble across, but in this context, for this dire wolf encounter it means combat or confrontation so the other meanings don't really fit. So do you see what I mean. Every word has several meanings, but it needs to be in context with the subject matter you are writing about.
