Right or left -- probably too difficult to implement, but it'd be cool

This is a minor thing (that would require doubling up on animations, so it's probably way too much work to ever implement), but I do wish Sims could be right or left handed.
  • I also used to have a mod which made the handedness visible as traits, funny thing is that a sim that was supposed to be based on me was also left handed like me, which was totally random :D

Yeah, it is actually already a thing! There's a mod that makes the traits visible. There's also a cheat that lets you equip the left or right-handedness trait for your sim. Could be worth looking up.
  • Here's the cheats if anyone's interested: https://twitter.com/SimGuruDaniel/status/758826869034582017

And the mod is show sim info, I use it as well because I'm curious to know what my sims hand preferences are. I do wish it applied to more things though, quite often I see my sims using their right hand even when they're supposed to be left handed. It's like all my sims are either right handed or ambidextrous, none of them seem to truly be left handed. :/

That's actually shockingly accurate to RL. Functions that occur on one side of the brain in right-handed people are actually mostly bilateral in lefties. I'll be surprised if that's deliberate in the game, I'd imagine that it would just be more difficult to rework all of the animations just to reflect handedness. Seems like it would get a bit excessive to include things like elbow-bumping from seating lefties and righties on the wrong side of each other at the dinner table.

I almost always write with my left hand, but I mouse with my right, so it seems pretty natural to me. And a lot of things fall somewhere between "awkward" and "impossible" to do with your left hand if they're designed to be used in the right hand, so it's not even just preference, but also available (and affordable) tools.

You can also tell by just watching your Sims use their hands. My sim had triplets (2 boys and girl) and when they were all doing their homework I noticed the girl was writing with a different hand than her brothers. She's a lefty
  • Ah, cool.

Though it's not too odd for right-handed parents to have a left-handed child. Both my grandparents were right-handed, but my mom's left. I'm right, one of my cousins is left.

Huh, that's really interesting, never knew that! :) That being said, I agree that I don't think it was deliberate in the game and was probably more a case of it being too difficult to reanimate everything.
