The first time, my goal was to do it as fast as possible and I went with retail. My sim had 16 days left before getting old (24 sims day after she started) when she got 500k. No youth potion needed. Not sure if I followed all your rules though. I didn't read all the comments but I tried to followed your rules on the first post to the best of my understanding ^^.
I had lots of fun and decide to start again with my own restriction. Gardening will be the only source of income for my sim this time.
