Yes the beginning - first generation - is difficult. That is part of the challenge. ;) Though it is tempting to upgrade quickly remember to pace your self. Else wise the bill will kill your income in a hurry. Your Sim can live outdoors (until we get weather) since lots are self contained. When privacy becomes a factor (bathroom) you can create a nearly free structure using the roofing tool.
