I’m still embarrassed thinking of last week’s shooting. Even the deans called me out on my inadequate behavior. And they are right, if I want to get anywhere with the modeling I have to get my wits together and focus on the job. My chance to show my worth came on Friday, when we were invited to a promotional party for a side line for Chanel makeup for teens, called ‘Miss C’.
When we heard that the fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld would attend, our dorm was buzzing. Everybody went through their wardrobe to decide what would be the best outfit for the event. Delilah and Sabi had a heated discussion on which kind of makeup they should use. Kit shot Ashley a quiet look. Kit always seems so shy, but up front she’s always on the spot. She’s really amazing. Ashley turned to me, her expression a little helpless. I don’t think she has used much makeup before she entered fashion school; probably didn’t own much. She mouthed: You lucky bastard!
“Here’s something for you all” Carmella dropped a stack of shiny black plastic boxes on the table. Each ‘Miss C’ engraved in gold and rose colors on the lid. “We got these as a gift to use for the party.”
The boxes were makeup kits with several, shades of blush, eye shadow, lip color, kayal, dark and light foundation to mix matching ones skin tone. The girls let out excited little shouts and Ashley released a relieved sigh.
I got the same box as the girls, no extras for males there. I use skin care products, and they are different to the girls’. Never have I used makeup, not even eyeliner.
I took the kit with me to my room and sat it down on the console under the mirror in the little bath. Staring at my image in front of me I slowly started to apply some color to my eyes. It came out awful! I looked like a clown. Frustrated I washed off everything. How will I ever get ready, I haven’t even picked out an outfit yet for the evening. I went to find Carmella. She always wears impeccable makeup. She sure could help me some to get the colors right that I still feel like myself.
I found her giving advice to Ashley and both girls invited me to join the makeup hangout. We had a fun afternoon and in the end Ashley and I we each knew one makeup to look stunning. The girls had picked their dresses already and Carmella told me it would be best to go for neutral black and white with the makeup we practiced. So I decided to wear a crisp white dress shirt and my summer wool combination with the turquoise accents. I have matching shoes for that too.
Karl Lagerfeld is absolutely awesome. I’m a big fan of him. All the things he has done: Fashion, Design, Photography, Pencil Arts; and I like his clean unpretentious style so very, very much.
We had been told that KL hated unpunctuality and so we all were at the event location half an hour before the opening was scheduled. The room hummed with models, journalists from fashion magazines, bloggers and fashion people. A commotion at the entrance caught my attention. And then he came. Two bodyguards posted themselves by the door, KL walked in with a fast stride for a room packed like this. He nodded right and left at people he knew while the crowd in front of him parted.
When he had almost reached the point where I was standing I was suddenly jostled. I had to step out of the line not to fall down and found myself right before my idol. By reflex I did a little bow before I stood straight and said : “It’s such an honor to meet you ,sir.”
Karl Lagerfeld’s expression was less grim than I had feared. Did the man ever smile?
“It’s good to see there are still young men with manners. And you seem very young. You want to be in the business, you have to really want it and work hard, boy.” He nodded and I was dismissed.
I stepped back. This was the second time I hear these words. Is there something written on my face that tells I wouldn’t work for what I want? Oh they don’t know me. I will show them all.
Jutting my jaw I turned my attention back to Lagerfeld, who had reached the podium accompanied by his assistant.
After a short speech the designer mingled with the crowd, but I didn’t get near him again. Only half an hour later he left again with his two body guards leaving his assistant behind.
This was my chance. I made a beeline to where the young man with groomed dreadlocks talked to a well known blogger. I said casually hi and the girl asked: “Do you know Justin?”
“I haven’t had the pleasure yet. I’m Lachlan. Macguire.”
“Hi I’m Tex from ‘All my Colors’ blog.” “Nice to meet you Tex. I know you; I mean I read your blog.”
“Thank you, I adore my male readers.”
I turned to Justin and stretched out my hand.
“Hi.” He said gripping my hand in a brief greeting.
“I hope I wasn’t out of line speaking up to your boss earlier.”
“Nah, actually I have a proposition for you. I was just waiting to see if you would come forward. The thing is, KL has this new project with this whole makeup campaign, and he’s looking for some models. You should come to the casting. I think you could be just what he may want. “
I was stunned. “I? You sure? I’d think a campaign for makeup would rather be for female models.”
“I can’t tell you more about his plans of course. If you want to come, give me your address and I’ll get all the info to you.”
“Of course I want to!” I think I laughed a little too loud, but who cares.
Later that evening, when we were back at the dorm I told the girls. They looked at me disbelievingly. In my bed I took out the lab top and wrote an e-mail to my grandparents, telling them about my evening. Curiosity let me hit Tex’s blog to see if she had already posted something. And sure there was a picture of Karl Lagerfeld giving his speech and gossip about all the people attending. I couldn’t believe it when I saw my name. This had been the best day in my life!
