I am not disagreeing they need better personalities, just with the implementation. One of my kids is a declared enemy of her sisters best friend but when they see each other they immediately start playing together on the swings. My unflirty sim gets into a flirty mood because the right painting is on the wall. They def need a personality overhaul.
I just personally wouldn't want it to be in the form of developing preferences that we don't give them ourselves as that takes away from the creative aspect of playing this game. The main thing I like about this game is that we have complete ability to create our own stories with our Sims. I think adding dislikes /likes that actually mean something would help a lot and so would a moodlet overhaul. (why does my sim mourn the exact same amount of time when her husband died as she did when the bartender she once ordered a drink from died?). I just think the likes /dislikes need to be chosen by the player so we can still create our desired stories with our sims.
