This is such a cool idea for a challenge. One recommendation I would add is playing on long lifespan, though it depends on how much time you can devote to playing/how long you want to play with an individual sim. I’ve found it gives me more time to really get to know my sims as ‘people’. I’d also suggest using the 28-day seasonal cycle; I’ve found it makes the game feel much more relaxed, plus holidays feel much more special. This is already how I play most of time (I’m the type of player who make their sims brush their teeth twice a day - my sims have better dental habits than I do!), so I have a lot of tips for making it an enjoyable experience.
Also, and this is a bit more out there: you could try to only visit worlds that seem like they could reasonably be traveled to in a car. For example, Henford-on-Bagley and Britchester, or Oasis Springs and Strangerville. This is difficult, and I often bend the rules, but it’s worth a try if you’re looking to mix up your gameplay.
