Your tradition of first friend as boy/girl friend is cute. I always try the "make friends" option on the first or second day of school and make a club with friends. Usually the romantic interest ends up being in that club but I let it progress naturally if I can. Still first friend usually ends up being at least best friend and often love interest in my games.
