Because I don't think gift giving should be an obligation. I hate receiving terrible impersonal gifts because someone felt obligated to buy me something for Christmas and I hate being expected to return the favor.
I see things in a different light......if they feel obligated, oh well. At least you got something nice, even if it is impersonal. And just cause someone got me something, doesn't mean I have to give something back. If they are a really good friend, then yeah I would WANT to, not because I felt obligated. But if it was just a random "here ya go" moment or from someone that was supposedly a good friend, I wouldn't feel obligated. If they got mad or thought that I was rude not to return the favor, oh well. It would seem like that person isn't such a good friend after all. I make sure to hash out things if I feel the person is feeling "obligated" to get me something. I mean really, are we children or adults? Of course I would make sure that I was tactful......but seriously, I'm not going to go all "ooohhh no, they might get offended if I say something". Im going to say it. If they dislike me for that too, no matter how its put, then they aren't really a friend.

Wasn't at all mad, just telling you how I view the situation you described. Some people really do have the problem you face every Christmas and I know it gets maddening. I just take a more lax view of it and enjoy the holiday. You are very much entitled to like or dislike things and say so. I am sorry if I came off the wrong way.......
