What's with Fish in the Sims 4?
Hello guys! I'd like to get straight to the point. In real life, I am a HUGE fish fanatic, no I don't eat them, I keep them as pets and shower them with love of course! And I've noticed how terrible fish keeping is in the Sims. The problems;
- There's under 10 options for fish tanks, and theres an option for a bowl, which is a CRUEL way to keep fish. The bowl distorts their vision and is often too small. We need to remove that stereotype because its killed hundreds of fish before. I'm a guy who's had my goldfish for way over a year, their average lifespan is 15 years.
I suggest that fish kept in the bowl die sooner than those in the aquariums, to add a bit of realism, or maybe even make it so that smaller fish do fine in them, but bigger fish like GOLDFISH die in them. Its a common misconception goldfish dont need a lot of space, when they do.
- Fish go stale even if they're in a fish tank. What the heck?
- There's NO interactions with the fish.
What I'd like to see;
- Let us feed our fish, it doesn't have to be super complexed, I just want fish that will die if they go hungry, or are overfed. Maybe they could have a mood meter which helps you tell if theyre healthy or not. Similar to plants.
- Let our fish kill each other! The sims team should have certain fish be incompatible, like of course big goldfish would eat little guppies. I just think it'd be nice to educate people about these things. I don't think water parameters, saltwater/freshwater and schooling should be a thing as thats probably too complicated and most people dont care enough for fish for it to be worthwhile.
- Tanks should get dirty. Enough said.
- We should be able to talk to our fish, and use a "take photo" interaction to catch a cute picture of them.
- This ones a tad far fetched, but, lets say you catch a poor quality fish. Perhaps we could keep it as a pet, and its quality would slowly go up! Or maybe high quality fish could produce babies. This'd be great for any sims who eat meat and are looking for a "home grown" kind of meal they know came from their own fish tank.
- Another slightly far fetched one. We should be able to sell fish in stores! Fill it up with tanks, and people who come can buy the fish straight out of the water. The only difference is, to buy them, your sim should come over and scoop one out for the sim, handing them a plastic bag!
The reason why this means everything to me, is because fish are always seen as the pet you get for your kid when they wont shut up about wanting a dog. They're seen as easy to care for, but in reality, they are deeply complexed and fascinating little critters. It always makes me so sad when people treat them like decorations, they are animals too people!
I know this seems extremely silly of me to suggest, since I really doubt there's a lot of Simmers who care about our lovely fishy friends, but it's been on my mind forever, and I just really wanted to get it off my chest. Fish are so neglected, and I really would love to see the Sims giving them the love they deserve.
This comes from a guy with four gorgeous Pearlscale Goldfish and a school of Minnows, Fish are misunderstood animals, they don't scratch your furniture or poop on your carpet. Show them some love!
