The gurus used to play this way when they were doing their Twitch streams. One would build the lot, another create the characters, and some other play the story. I suppose once you post the game save online, anyone can pick it up and continue playing it, then post their version online for someone else to play further on. The story doesn't have to stop for everyone if someone decided to kill the characters in their save. But, half the fun with this things is finding out what the characters have been up to while someone else was playing them.
