Add a Dress Code Sign to Set Outfit Requirements for Any Venue
his is a feature I've wanted since Get Together introduced venue types with their own vibes. Let me pitch it simply: a dress code sign that lets players set the required outfit for any venue, and makes Sims and NPCs automatically change to match.
The Problem
The game already has implied dress codes—some lots and situations nudge Sims toward certain outfits—but there's no explicit, player-controlled way to say "this is a formal venue" or "no shoes, no shirt, no service." Here's what goes wrong:
- NPCs show up dressed wrong. I build an elegant rooftop cocktail bar, set it as a lounge, and half the patrons arrive their everyday wear. The venue's whole atmosphere collapses because nobody looks like they belong.
- Themed events are impossible to enforce. A 1920s speakeasy, a beach formal wedding, a black-tie gala, a tropical luau—the game can't communicate "wear this" to the Sims attending. I can't set a party dress code in the event planner.
- Weddings and venues need consistency. I want a venue that always means formal. Not "usually." Not "if the game feels like it." Always.
The Proposal: A Dress Code Sign Object
Add a dress code sign (a small wall or floor object, base game friendly) that can be placed on any lot. Clicking it opens a menu to set the dress code, with options like:
- No Dress Code (default—current behavior)
- Everyday
- Formal
- Party
- Athletic
- Swimwear
- Sleepwear
- Hot Weather / Cold Weather
- Styles
- Colors
Once set:
- Player-controlled Sims automatically change into a matching outfit when they arrive (and change back when they leave, or per player preference).
- NPCs and townies who spawn or walk onto the lot automatically switch to a matching outfit.
- The sign can be locked to the lot (venue-wide, persists across visits) or set temporarily (e.g., for a single event).
Why This Matters
- Venue identity. A fancy restaurant should look fancy. A gym should look like a gym. Right now, the game's own venue types don't reliably enforce this, and players have no lever to fix it.
- It uses existing systems. Outfit categories, outfit changing, and lot traits all already exist. This is a player-facing control layer on top of mechanics the game already has.
- It solves a real, constant annoyance. Anyone who has built a formal venue and watched guests arrive in their hot weather outfits knows this pain.
- It's a building/storytelling tool. Speakeasies, galas, beach weddings, costume parties—players could finally build venues that feel like their theme.
Design Notes
- Base game friendly. The sign itself could ship in the base game, with the outfit categories already available.
- Optional enforcement. Some players will want Sims to auto-change; others will want a nudge (Sims autonomously change but can be overridden). A simple "Enforce dress code" vs. "Suggest dress code" toggle would cover both.
- Don't break existing lots. Default to "No Dress Code" so nothing changes unless the player opts in.
- Pair with venue types. Ideally the sign could be linked to the lot's venue type (e.g., "this lounge requires formal"), but a standalone sign is more flexible and simpler to ship.
TL;DR
- Add a dress code sign object, placeable on any lot.
- Click to set the required outfit category for the venue.
- Sims and NPCs automatically change to match on arrival.
- Default off; fully optional.
