Better Categories

A lot of categories are so filled up. I came up with a concept for subcategories to add to the side of each area I think needs it. This will be perfect for the "objects by room" tab! The concept is based on the "Styled rooms" category or the "Outdoor Plants" Category.

subcategories for:
paintings: grunge, decals, posters, paintings, all
clutter: Kid clutter, kitchen clutter, bedroom clutter, office clutter, misc., all
plants: hanging plants, wall plants, table plants, standing plants, outdoor plants, all
beds: bass/crib/tod bed, single/pod/coffin, bunk bed, double bed, all
lights: ceiling lights, wall lights, table lights, floor lights, outdoor lights, misc., all
Chairs: desk chair, dining chair, armchair, poof, all
couch: sofa, love seat, ottomans, benches, all
Rugs: circle, runner, small, medium, large, misc., all

There are many more categories we have now that I think could use this type of organization. The "misc. decor", "Sculptures", and "wall art" is a mess and filled with a lot of things.

As for the "activities "section", it would be nice if all related items were next to each other. For example, all easels next to each other ranging from low price to high price. Next to it or before it could be the sketchpads, and the murals you can paint from City Living.
Workout equipment, instruments, and such more.

I also don't think this needs to be limited to furniture. I'm also thinking for doors and windows!
Doors: Interior doors, arches, exterior doors, all
Windows: circle/arch, tiny/small, medium, floor to ceiling, etc., all

I have a google slide about this and a video down below, hopefully explaining better!

@Simsdeelicious - I am so glad you posted this. I fully support this suggestion. +Me Too

Good work on your YouTube video and Google Slideshow describing this essential need for better categorization in Build Buy Mode. The Sims 4 isn't going away and Build Buy is only going to grow, and grow, and grow with more DLC in our future.

I've tried to post this same idea in the past on several occasions, but my posts just kept getting marked as spam and wouldn't post. I assume it's maybe because of how in depth I went into my request for Subgroups, making for a long read. In my proposal, I chose to call this much needed organizational category Subgroups since we technically have subcategories.

    An example of a Subgroup:
    Decorations > Sculptures > Statues
    (Category > Subcategory > Subgroup)

I haven't given up on this idea and have since invested time to update and refine my graphics and proposal.

The area of Build Buy panel I had planned to suggest for displaying Subgroup icons was the bar allotted in Styled Rooms, above the thumbnail preview panel. This space could easily fit up to 12 Subgroups, including All and Miscellaneous.

Being the organizational nerd that I am, I even went so far as to fully categorize my entire Buy catalog into proposed Subgroups. Below is an example of my Lighting objects divided into Subgroups.

    Proposed example for Lighting:

    Lighting > Ceiling > Subgroups:

I hope the Sims Development Team hear this request for Better Categories in Build Buy Mode, and I hope we may one day see better BB organization implemented in the near future.

    OMGSH?!?!!

This is SO GOOD and so much more detailed. I love the examples you went for with the lights.

If curtains could also be in different groups that would be amazing as well!

like “short”, “medium”, and “tall” for the wall heights.

it’s definitely time for a change, as you mentioned, the catalog will grow and grow

Absolutely fabulous idea. I've been playing for years and I still don't know how to find what I'm looking for. Splitting up windows & doors into the sub sections you suggested would be so good. It's hard to figure out how big windows are just from the thumbnails. And you're right about the activities section. It's an absolute chore to find things in there.

My personal gripe is with the hanging clothes being in the dresser tab while the furniture pieces you can hang them on are in the display shelf tab.

  • Thanks for this thread (and video). The crazy thing is there are objects in the game with tags that are not used in the actual game or sorted in a way that makes sense. I usually give up on clutter because it just takes soooooooooo long to sort through it all and it makes no sense the way things are currently sorted in build buy. Honestly, it discourages me from wanting new packs because I feel like I'll never find the objects I want anyway because its already attrocious finding things, especially in decor, paintings, wall art, and clutter because so many things are clumped together that are wildly different things.

I have had bad luck with better build buy, my game always flips out when I use it or lags like crazy, so I don't. But I just would love a better "official" sorting/tagging system.
