A cheap car will be much more economical on gasoline and maintenance.

Reality tends to be the opposite.
Cheap cars usually have more problems, and can be expensive to run.
Mid range cars are usually the cheapest to run, while expensive cars become expensive to keep on the road when something goes wrong.
