Re: Marriage won't let you change name.

Sims 4 has never had a pop up to change the name when your sims get married. Instead, you can just go into CAS after your sims are married and change the last name of whichever sim you want the name changed for. I actually prefer that as I don't usually change my sim's last name when they get married and it's simple enough to do.

Best regards,

Jennifer

  • @MapleSimmerThere was a pop up. Around 2018-2019 it stopped appearing. It was blue and looked like the baby one. I remember using it when my Sims got remarried to change the family surname. Then it didn't show up again for several updates, and showed up once then disappeared nearly-completely around 2020. It was optional, the second time it showed up I never went through with it. Also, keep in mind, I am on Xbox and it's only showed up three or four times, many UI changes ago now. So it might've been an Xbox exclusive bug or something.

@thedirectorlives This was removed a long time ago. It's by design and not a bug.

EDIT: Actually, reading old threads I think Maplesimmer is correct. There never was one for Sims 4. There was an issue with not being able to change the name in CAS but that was solved a long time ago. Think that's what I remembered.

  • @crinrict That's incredibly silly and it's an incredibly useful thing that should be given its own menu option on the arch. Or do they only break the experience of the game for paying customers?

@thedirectorlives In the very beginning, you couldn't change the last name without a cheat. I don't even remember if there was a popup ?

This is how it was in the beginning: https://answers.ea.com/t5/Bug-Reports/FIXED-Why-doesn-t-the-option-to-change-surname-come-up-when-sims/m-p/3527209#M2664 then they added CAS change without a cheat but now I'm unsure if there was a pop-up

    This also doesn't talk about a pop-up: https://answers.ea.com/t5/Game-Questions/PS4-Marriage-Names/m-p/6441725#M1579

EDIT: Also found this old thread: https://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/896989/wife-name-change-on-marriage-pop-up-option-options-husband-spouse-hyphen-no-change so maybe make a post in feedback ?

  • @crinrict Yeah, after that they added a pop-up (It was like the change baby name pop-up. Before the new UI stuff.) for a short while and it disappeared without as much as a mention.

I know it was 2018 or 2019 because my save is that long and it showed up with the second and third generation of my Sims. I didn't take the option with the older Sims, but with the younger Sims, I did. One of those Sims is still alive to this day.

@thedirectorlives Do you have a picture of the pop-up ? Maybe it was something they tried on console ? I can't remember there ever being one.

    Hi @thedirectorlives

You can easily change names anytime by clicking a mirror and "Change Sim".

You can even do it at the wedding venue right after the ceremony if you want 🙂

Not all methods of entering CAS offer the name change option.

  • @crinrict Unfortunately no, as I only recently learnt how to screenshot on Xbox. I have a very good memory and I remember it looking like the screen when you get a child from adoption and rename it. (The only one that hasn't been changed, come to think of it.)

@mightyspritesims See, the wedding arch option is the one I mean. That doesn't consistently show up.

Maybe this is a misunderstanding then ? Is this about a wedding arch option or something general even for non-wedding events (like city hall or eloping) ?

I did one wedding with the venue cause I find them too tedious so I wouldn't know what options the wedding arch had after they introduce MWS (although that would be later than 2019). At the time, the move in screen messed up the ending of the wedding so I never looked back.

  • @crinrict See, I don't have My Wedding Stories. I did the YouTuber thing of just putting an arch on the lot. I don't think I've actually ever done a proper venue wedding event thing. (Even if I had, achievements have been broken for years so I wouldn't know.) I just get them married with the arch and it saves SO much hassle.

I play on Xbox and have to alter the surname in CAS. But I think in an older Sims Game, possibly 2 or 3 that there may have been a pop-up.

In Sims 4 I just click on a mirror and Change Sim.

    @thedirectorlives I'm confused now.

Could you explain more WHERE you had the pop-up ? After clicking on the arch and get married or with a specific interaction on the arch ?
  • @crinrictAfter getting remarried, there was an unexpected popup (Happened while I was trying to get another Sim to either eat or garden, can't remember) and the game asked if I wanted to change the surname of one of my Sims. I chose to change her surname to the same as the other Sim's. Second time I changed the surname in this way was a first marriage and I changed the name after asked. That was more recent, I think last year. I also decided against doing it with the first Sim's parents, even though the option had appeared.

@thedirectorlives I've never ever seen that pop-up in Sims 4

Since you're console, it's not mods either (cause they are mods that let you decide), so I really don't know.

@thedirectorlives I have Wedding Stories but I don't get a pop up. I do have a fair few bugs with weddings in my game though unfortunately so maybe that's why I'm not seeing the same thing.
I usually just use the Elope option at a nice location and with invited guests at the lot. Trying to host a wedding is problematic. I also use an arch sometimes. Then I pop to CAS. I hyphenate the names usually and always wish the box was bigger.

    @thedirectorlives

I recall the "Manage Households" pop-up to move Sims between households when a Sim marries another Sim outside of the household, but I don't recall there ever being a "change Sim's surname" option and I've been playing this game for something like eight years. Maybe it was a limited roll-out test, or just a short-lived console thing like crinrict said? I found a few old videos of TS4 weddings from the timeframe you mention, but they don't show this pop-up (though it is a PC video, so if it was a console-exclusive thing like crinrict suggested then it wouldn't show up anyway). I'll keep looking around, though, I'm curious if anyone else remembers this menu option.

Hi! I'm SimmerStar4 (they/them). I'm not an expert on game issues, so don't take me as one! I'm just a Sims player who wants to try and help fellow players, and who finds game bugs and issues interesting.

@SimmerStar4That's the one I know too. I'm on console. But I played Sims 3 on pc then on Xbox and I think I may remember a surname box on that.
I know I get it with babies and child/pet adoption in Sims 4.

Edit: nope, I'm reliably informed that in Sims 3 the name changed automatically. There's my terrible memory! I can remember that happening now.

@mightyspritesims I too remember some methods of going into CAS not letting you change the name, but I just checked and 'plan outfit' (on mirror), 'change sim', 'choose likes/dislikes', using 'modify in cas' on the sim (requires you to right mouse click with testing cheats on) and changing the household from manage worlds all let you change the name (I even turned cheats off to see if that made a difference, it didn't for me, and then to make sure, removed my mods folder, same results each time). The only method that doesn't even show the name, so therefore you can't change it, is 'plan outfit' on the closet from Get Together, but as I said, I do feel like there were more times that you couldn't change the name in CAS than the Get Together closet in the past.

    Best regards,
    Jennifer

I googled (images.google.com) for “sims marriage change name popup” and the only relevant-looking hit was a Sims 2 mod. There were a lot of articles on how to change your name after marriage in the Sims 4, but none of them referred to a popup.

  • @SimmerStar4Yeah, it's happened at least three times in my 6 years of playing The Sims 4. I'd like it to be an actual feature instead of a random bug that probably just spawned out of nowhere. It looks like the baby adopting notification. All blue. (Sidenote, has that been made consistent with the new menus? Last I remember it wasn't.)
