When the monarch dies, the heir becomes the next monarch, but their spouse and other children get demoted to dame/knight. Shouldn't they keep their titles?

I had a royal family and I was killing the dad off for the plot but all the children lost their prince and princess titles including the heir. The heir just went down to the first stage of the noble career. Is there any way to fix this without having to make the heir work to be king or having to cheat his and his siblings titles back to what they were? I am also on ps5 so I don't have any mods.
