Sims try to "watch tv with" their teen daughter

For awhile now I've had this issue where my adult sims will autonomously attempt to "watch tv with" their teen daughter and put on the kids network, as if she was a toddler who asked for the TV to be...

    why would you choose to design an interaction where parents of teens "watch TV with" by themselves and get bored watching the kids network while their teen child doesn't get affected by it? what purpose does that serve?
