When I ask clients about their inspirations or preferences at the beginning, I sometimes get useless information, e.g. that they don't like a certain hobby.
But this information doesn't help me to fulfill the assignment and decorate the rooms correctly, because I need color and style preferences.
Because of the missing information, the clients are often unhappy in the end.
That they don't like a particular hobby is very useful. If they for instance don't like guitar music don't place any guitars in the room or pictures with guitars.
Remember that you can ask several times if the first answer doesn't help you. Remember to put more emphasis on answers that those that will use it gives. For instance a kids room don't listen too much to the parents if it conflicts with what the kid want. In general go with furniture from the pack and the most expensive things that do not go over their budget and look for paint or wallpaper that add to the environment.
