Unpopular opinion, but I'm fine with the lack of cars in The Sims 4
I understand why a lot of players want them, especially those who played earlier Sims games. However, I've never played The Sims 3, so I don't have the nostalgia for cars that many players do.
Looking at the feature from a Sims 4 perspective, I've never really felt that the game was missing anything important because cars weren't included.
In many cases, traveling in The Sims 4 is already fairly simple:
- Click destination
- Loading screen
- Arrive
If cars were added, I imagine a lot of travel would become:
- Walk to car
- Get in car
- Play a driving animation
- Loading screen
- Arrive
For me, it feels like the driving animation could end up taking longer than the loading screen itself.
Don't get me wrong, I understand the appeal. Cars could add immersion, give garages a purpose, and provide another thing for Sims to own and collect. I just don't see them as a major gameplay feature compared to improvements to traits, aspirations, autonomy, relationships, animations, or other systems that affect how Sims actually behave.
The only car from The Sims 3 that has ever made me think, "Okay, that's actually cool," is the Galaxa Space Car. From what I've heard, it was technically classified as a car, but it could do far more than simply transport Sims from one place to another. Using a flying saucer to cause chaos around town sounds far more entertaining to me than driving a normal car from one lot to another. Features that create unique stories and memorable moments are generally more interesting to me than features that simply make the game feel more realistic.
I'm not against cars being added. I've just never considered their absence to be a problem.
Does anyone else feel the same way, or am I completely alone on this one?
