In my opinion, you didn't really miss anything of value - if the give away items had value, EA would not have given them away, they would have found a way to monetize them. Just know, they aren't stopping. Their latest sucky event is now FORCED on everyone. You can't opt out - which I've been demanding since they came up with this stupid idea - you can't shut down the 'event UI', and even if you have Wants turned off - your sims will be FORCED to have the event wants. Like you, I am considering stopping playing because EA is just a greedy corporation that doesn't care about the RGUs (Revenue Generating Units) that play their game - we're not even a number to them.
Might be best do do what I'm doing, identifying other Life Simulation games that are a) Better than any version of The Sims...ever; and b) willing to accept feedback and critiques from fans, rather than ignore them.

I've actually... done things to the Event UI in Live Mode, but again, only folks who can mod can benefit from it.
It shouldn't be terribly difficult to get rid of the Wants, but... I also revived the "Dismiss" feature on the "Pin" button, so I just (x) off any wants I don't want.
These are (2) screenshots from my "SGFX Patch" for UI Cheats Extension. I've also done these as "standalone" mods and I can patch just about any UI mod. I don't actually use UI Cheats Extension. I made the patches for the simmers who do:
I could technically also remove the "Event Quest Button".

Sadly, we shouldn't have to use Mods, EA should make these option and give us the ability to Opt Out completely. So far, no rewards they have offered have been worth the effort - even when none is required. So when they force one of these events on us and don't give us an Opt Out option, I play inZOI instead.
