Advice for how to freely place objects on surfaces

I can't figure out how to freely place items/clutter on surfaces. I've looked it up and I've seen people say you need to press the alt button (option button on Mac), place the item on the surface, move the surface and then press alt to hoven the object on where you'd like for it to be, then move the surface object back, but that doesn't work for me. I'm trying to improve my building skills but most tips are directed for PC.

The instructions are the same for Mac, you use the Alt/Option key:

    1. Have the MOO (move objects on) cheat enabled - bring up the cheat console by holding down the CTRL, Shift and C buttons and type bb.moveobjects then hit enter/return. You will get confirmation the cheat is enabled. Contrary to popular belief you do not need to enter 'on' to enable the cheat. Press ESC to close the cheat console.
    2. Place your table/counter/whatever surface object you're using and then place your clutter item on the surface. It will snap to one of the slots on the surface. Slots are invisible, you cannot see them, they are added to the object in game development.
    3. Move the surface object a few grid squares away. The clutter object will move with the surface object.
    4. Hold down the Option key, grab the clutter object and move it over to where the surface object was and where you envision you want it to be on the surface object. It will retain the height of the surface object.
    5. Grab the surface object and move it back to where it was. The clutter item is now placed freely on the surface object and not in a slot
    6. Repeat with multiple clutter objects. You may have to move the surface object back and forth whilst moving the clutter items into the desired location. You cannot stop the clutter items from snapping to the surface object if they are too close to it.

  • When trying to make a house I wanted to push a plant into an urn to make a custom pot but I can’t figure out how. I’ve got bb.moveobjects on and tried using the f5 key on my keyboard. Is it because I’m using a laptop or does that not matter? I’m so confused please help.

What happens when you try? Are you sure move objects is on? Once it’s on, you should be able to place objects anywhere, including overlapping each other. So you should be able to just put your pot and your plant on the same spot.

  • Move objects is on but plant still snaps to the table even while holding alt

I've merged your post into this thread. When placing objects on surfaces you have to use a simple hack to get round the objects snapping to the surface. See the solution for further instruction.
