Can someone explain why the game keeps putting my roof on the ground?

I can’t figure out what I’m missing. I’m trying to cover my crops because I have seasons and I watched someone on YouTube easily make columns and place a roof on them, but even after pressing the up ...

    @DystopianViolet The trick is that you need a ceiling - ie a room - to initially place the roof. Just initially though; once placed, you can drag it off by resizing, and/or delete the walls from under it.

    To cover plants, first build a room nearby - it doesn't need to be more than a single tile.

    Then place the roof on top.

    Drag the edge of the roof off and over to where you want it.

    Then drag the other edge over to where you want it to end - it no longer needs to be touching the ceiling.

    Now you can delete your mini room, leaving the roof floating.

    Place columns underneath to make it look like they're holding up the roof.
