Cannot "Ask to Teach Magic"

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:PC
Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
What is your current game version number? 1.55.108.1020
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? [[The problem is Realm of Magic]] Cats and Dogs City Living Get Famous Get to Work Get Together Island Living Seasons City Living Vampires Strangerville Vintage Glamour Dine Out Bowling Parenthood Get to Work Outdoor Retreat Luxury Party Stuff Holiday Celebration Laundry Day Kids Room
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? UPDATE: CAN'T PRACTICE MAGIC AT ALL (Can't even do so the way my sister did by clicking on Sim and selecting practice magic) Not sure if this is the cause but I had the royal living mod activated when I downloaded and installed Realm of Magic. Visited the realm of magic before I knew what to do, bought things from all the kioks. Then went home, then went back to Realm of Magic before looking up what to do. "Appointed Court Wizard" for one of the Sages then attempted to find **The option to perform ascension test "Ask to teach magic"** and it did not appear.
What happens when the bug occurs? The option to "ask to teach magic" does not pop up for any of the Sages. Cannot even click on Sim to practice magic.
What do you expect to see? "Ask to teach magic" pop up in first action options or in friendly action options when clicking on the NPC Sages
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Yes
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Neutral/Not Sure

I uninstalled the mod, disabled CC, repaired game files and still no luck. [[UPDATE: Also uninstalled and reinstalled from the base game up and still no luck. I'm sure I can do it via file viewer but I don't want to break my game. Any in depth info or guides would be greatly appreciated.]]

  • Hi @AngelLegit - You have to be at least "friends" with a sage before you can ask them to teach magic. If you're still just acquaintances, it won't work. So, after following Crin's advice to remove your mods / cc, try building the relationship bar to friends first. The option to "Ask to Teach Magic" should appear under the friendly menu after that. If that doesn't work, please reply back and we can troubleshoot further.

Edited to add: If your sim is another type of occult (mermaid, vampire), the option will not appear, either.

I highly recommend Carl's Guide to Realm of Magic for a great overview and specific tips and tricks for playing the dlc. Happy Simming!

  • Well.... Maybe this is a sign to take on the habit of doing a clean test game first each time a new pack comes out to learn how things are supposed to run first before going back to your normal mods.... from now on?

  • Hi @AngelLegit

Moving this to tech for troubleshooting

Try resetting your user files as described in the factory reset described in this post: http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-4/FAQ-Troubleshooting-Steps-amp-Known-Issues/m-p/3621199

You won't loose anything. Just make sure to not delete any files  and make a backup.

After renaming, repair your game by right clicking on the game in Origin.

Try on a new game with nothing added back first (start new game). If it works, put back your save game and try again. If it still works, you can start putting stuff back.

    • Options.ini (or just re-set all your settings manually)
    • Tray Folder
    • Screenshots/Videos/Custom music
    • Rest of the save games (leave out slot_00000001.save which is the autosave and no longer needed - if you still have it)
    • Custom content like clothing, hair, skins, make up ....
    • Mods (one by one, making sure they all still work)

The rest does not need putting back, cause they are mostly cache files that recreate or log files that are not needed for the game.

  • So, the very first step I tried in backing up was renaming the folder and it's not open absolutely anywhere. But I can't rename because somewhere, it's open.

  • I actually figured out that I can't be a mermaid and a spellcaster so I removed the mermaid trait. Good thing I didn't try to mess with my game.

@AngelLegit - Your screenshot shows you were trying to rename your program files folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 4) This is NOT the folder to rename for a backup, so it's lucky it wouldn't let you do it!

For future backups, make sure you're following the troubleshooting steps exactly: Backup your Documents game folder; the default location is

    C:\[YourWindowsUserName]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4

Since you use mods / cc, it will be very important that you follow these steps after every patch / update, in order to test and update any mods that need it. Mods and cc can become outdated and cause issues with your game. So even though this was not an issue with mods, you will want to make sure that you understand the backup process. It's also a pretty good idea to Make a Backup Copy of Your Saves Folder every once in a while, just in case a glitch happens. That way if something happens, you don't lose everything. I learned that the hard way when a weird glitch deleted my entire saves folder, and I lost every one of my Sims games.

Thank you for letting us know that your problem was that your sim was already an occult (mermaid) and therefore can't be a spellcaster, too. Happy simming!
