I'm trying to study a historical display at the museum for the event and no matter what I click all I get is view with Emits picture on it. I've tried all my museums. I even took out my mods and repaired the game and still the same thing.

I was having the same problem. I looked at a painting and a sculpture with View.. no progress. Then I tried your two objects, exactly as stated. And this worked for me, thank you!
It's not appearing for me but I had my sim view about 8-12 pieces of art in a row and then the event marked it as complete.
I went to the Brindleton Bay museum, but I don't think it matters as I've read other people doing the same thing at other museums and having the same result.

I left Museum and went back the next day, viewed a couple times and it worked, after View was completed it next said ask an elder about the shard. I vIewed the Knight in armour at the WillowCreek Museum, I thought it wasn't working as I was expecting to see the word study, I just had to wait until my Sim was done fully viewing for it to complete task.
This worked for me, thank you! Mods were turned off and I put these items in a museum.
For some reason your solution of using the "on the hunt statuette" worked, I tried clicking on painting, floor sculptures, and etc., but only the statuette that you listed worked for me.
