Indeed that feature is completely detrimental. I completely disabled it. First I unchecked the story settings in the household manager individually, then in the same window the main setting too. Just this week I found the option to disable the feature entirely. Its in the game options -> gameplay -> scroll down.
Also removing MCCC population and pregnancy modules helped because they dont seem to work properly and spawn a ton of babies across all worlds when adjusting the settings for zero baby chance and other settings that are supposed to prevent random babies, move-ins and disappearance of sims.
Also making a backup of the entire sims 4 folder under documents helps.
