The GTW retail system was poorly designed. A Sim has a better chance of making a living selling from a stand rather than opening a retail store. A retail store offers no benefits in the game over selling from a stand.
Stand Benefits
- No employees needed
- No lot retail lot needed
- Easy to sell because no perks are required and you don't need to fill up a bar
- More customers
Stand Downsides
- Can't sell large objects
Some retail stores will never be profitable unless you sell other items. Let's say a retail lot costs $100k to get set up (lot, building, stock). It would take 100 days to break even if the store made a profit of $1000 a day. Stores can do about 6-10 sales per day starting off. That increases if you hire employees.
That means all stores must sell high-end products to break-even and make a profit sooner. Some lower margin stores will never be profitable.
