Hi;
Romance is a fickle thing in TS4; it can take a while to build up a decent relationship, and social faux pas can throw any sort of pursuit of romance into a wild tailspin.
By the way things sound, it sounds like something might have occurred recently that got their conversations towards each other to become rather awkward. There's a few ways to fix this, though Romance Interactions repeatedly may not be the best way to go:
- Have them turn to more neutral topics, such as Friendly Interactions like Brighten Day, Get to Know, etc. These interactions have a low failure rate, and usually can help rebuild trust between the Sims. (If you're got it saying they're having a Pleasant Conversation, you're on the right track. If it's saying something like Awkward Conversation, Unpleasant Conversation, Offensive Conversation, etc., then you might want to find Interactions that mend ties, or just have your Sims go their separate ways for a bit. Time does heal wounds in this game.)
- You have the most success with Romantic Interactions when your Sim and the Sim you are courting are Flirty; have a Sim go take a Steamy Shower, or Try On Outfits in front of a mirror. (On the flipside, do NOT attempt to perform Romantic Interactions when Embarrassed; your chance of failure grows exponentially when attempting to perform interactions in a negative emotional state, and Embarrassed hurts Romance Interactions quite a bit.) Failed Romance Interactions tend to generate Embarrassed Moodlets; make sure you get rid of these by Having a Pep Talk in a mirror, or having another Sim Try to Cheer them up. You can also have the Embarrassed Sim shake off the Embarrassment by using tagged Interactions to change the subject, such as a Self-Deprecating Joke, or by Sharing Insecurities.
- Work on your Charisma Skill to increase default chance of Romance Interactions working; your Sim will do better overall if they're a good speaker. (If you happen to have Get Famous, the Acting Skill can also be a huge help, since you can use it to shrug off bad conversations once in a while, provided you have the appropriate level of Acting.)
