How to load an old save

So, let me explain. Before I got a computer, i had been using my brother's, on which I played the Sims. I downloaded Sims here, on my new computer, and found that I had no household. I had worked so hard, and scanning lightly, I've been reading things about a backup. I don't remember doing any backup (I had been using the same EA account, just in case). Was a backup needed? Can I not play on that household again? I would very much like to know. Thanks!
