no follow to school button for my sims

my teen sims attend high school and I've recently bought the high school pack, however, I've not been able to join them to school. I removed mods, restarted the app, cleared cache, but nothing seems to work and I still cant join them. the follow messages that I'm supposed to turn on isn't in their career tab/button and hasn't been at all since buying the pack. feeling very stuck on how to fix this as it feels like I've wasted my money.
