Try enabling needs decay on the postbox, then play for a little while, then disable needs decay on the postbox. Then play for a little while. Then enable needs decay again. Then see if that helps.
Thanks for your reply, I think the save file was corrupted. I ended up putting the family and house on to the gallery and loading them into a new save file. Shame to lose my relationships with other households though!
