Re: Game Backups

Well, @Gednaa I do REAL backups ... hahahaha.  Don't give anybody an excuse to put things on the same machine and call it a backup ... LOL.  Anyway, I don't even get grimmy.  Within like 3 minutes, my Sim was gone and the grim reaper didn't even show up.  WHAT was that?  Not for the woman or man Sim.  Is that a bug?  Doesn't grimmy always show up during Sim deaths?

And, wait ... what's the cheat for this phenomenon?  Here's to learning new things!  Hahahahahaha.  Don't you find it funny how we take this silly game so seriously?  It's like we're offended when a character dies on the scene.  Don't know why that struck me as bizarre, but it did.

😃😉

@KingRayVeteran That reminds me I must buy an external Hard Drive. I'm on Mac so all my previous ones won't work! I've never had a death where grimmy didn't come along??? That's a strange one! I wonder if anybody else knows why that its?

@Gednaa  I have 3!!! Yes, do invest in one or more.  I was a bit surprised that the reaper didn't show up twice, so that's why I'm thinking it's a bug now.

@KingRayVeteran I had a 3TB USB 3 for my PC, so I'm saving up to get a version that will go with the Mac. I sometimes wish I didn't switch! It's been more expense than it was worth! :D

@Gednaa  I absolutely have to have them, or I can't function. I'm a computer nerd and learned those lessons long ago. Started out a computer operator in 1978, and have gone through successions of computers & PC's. Some lessons you can never unlearn. I'm even nervous my backup devices are in the same house! Hahahaha

I refuse to buy into the Cloud technology, because there is no guarantee others don't have access to our data AND our machines, and they'd charge too much $$$$ for the storage.  Why should I pay another company for my backups?  I have a 1.5TB, 8.0TB, and a 4.0TB. One of them is attached to my laptop. All Windows.

@KingRayVeteran Before I started playing The Sims, I was a musician and my record label told me to get a Mac. I wish I hadn't. I've had so much expense since I bought that, and I'm still trying to get things just right. It's bad enough playing a game (Sims 4) so music is out of the question! Career in tatters, playing a game to give me something else to do during Lockdown! I hate the Clouds too... but I'll get told off for going off at a tangent. Could say more! Nice to meet you, @KingRayVeteran.
  • @Gednaa  You could use Disk Utility to format your external hard drives.  It's very simple and very fast.  And if the connector is incompatible, you could probably find an adapter for £10 or less on Amazon.

@puzzlezaddict Thank so much for your kind info! I'll try that! Ace! My many existing drives are incompatible, so I will look on amazon. Well worth a shot for that price! Yay!

@KingRayVeteran I got an ethernet cable to USB adapter so I can network my Mac to my PC. Arriving tomorrow. Thanks for the info. Yay!!! Backups!!!!
  • @Gednaa

What connection is on the external? If it's standard USB or USB-C it should plug into your iMac fine. macOS can read FAT formatted drives no problem so you should be able to see all the data on the drive, unless the drive was pre-formatted with some kind of Windows only proprietary software (I think WD and Seagate do this?) in which case you may have to plug it into a PC and copy everything over to a standard FAT formatted drive.

First thing I do when I buy a new external is wipe and reformat it to get rid of unnecessary software installed on it.

@Bluebellflora Yes this was the problem I was having. None of my drives were formatted as FAT and my main one was WD. So now I have an ethernet adaptor and linked it up to my PC laptop. Guess who can't remember their password to get in! I can't even remember my Microsoft email, so I'm still stumped! Apart from doing a complete factory reset on the laptop so I can get in without a password, or a new pass, I can't think what else to do. I have lot of photos on the laptop that I don't want to wipe. I'll probably wake up at 3am and remember my password! lol
  • @Gednaa

So what were they formatted as?

How do you anticipate the macOS will even read the Windows formatted internal drive of the PC you are hooking it up to? Aren't Windows bootable drives formatted as NTFS or something else that macOS can't read?

@Bluebellflora could you split the topic please? It is going from Sims suddenly dying from laughter to a more technical issue related to external hard drives.

    Thanks in advance.

    Sul sul Simmers!

As you can see, I split a few comments form the original discussion here on Sims dying from laughter.

This is because the conversation went away from the initial topic to game backups and the more 'techy' aspects. So, here's your own thread for that - enjoy the chat about backups and external hard drives. 🙂

@EA_Leeloo why do I keep getting notifications for this one when there are no new posts? Egads, we need more micromanagement of notifications around here. All or nothing? Ummmmmm...

@KingRayVeteran Thaks so Much! I networked my Mac and laptop PC and am in the process of copying stuff over to the PC now. Kudos to you!
