If your Sim is in dire straits and you are not adverse to cheat codes you can save them. Definitely pause, hit control-C. A white rectangle will appear at the top of the screen type in; testingcheats on

Then hit control-c again to close the box. Now shift click on the sim and select cheat needs then choose make happy. All of your Sims needs will be filled. This will throw off their rhythm a bit but they will not have adverse reactions, like death due to hunger.
