It is not when making sims. It is NPCs and Townies. She can't change those names.
- Psychotps5 years agoSeasoned Ace
Are you talking about if you add an NPC or Townie to your family? Because this is outside of that. It isn't that she wants to change names either. She just wants to keep from seeing a name in general. She has OCD and cannot see or hear certain names, otherwise it will send her into her rituals or a panic attack. She wants to avoid that, but play the game.

When the game creates a new sim on its own, it will randomly choose a name for them from these huge lists of names it has available. Once the sim is created, you can modify the sim and their name in CAS. But that won't stop the problem of seeing them in the first place.
Hmmm... if it's only a few names, I suppose someone could make a mod to remove just those names from the game. It shouldn't be hard if the name lists are in the tuning files. But as @crinrict said, there are a LOT of them in there.
Is there a guide to find name files in the game myself? I have no problem looking for it and finding it myself. I actually need first names. Not last. ☹️ Sorry, I probably should have specified.
- crinrict5 years agoHero+You will need to download a tool called S4Studio (just google). (use at your own risk, not supported by EA)
- Open the tool (will take a moment on the first start)
- Go Tools - Extract Tuning.
- In the Window search for: Sim_Spawner
- select module/sims.Sim_spawner
- Click Add to current package
- choose any name for your package file
- This will then open the package file.
- Click on Sims Data and make sure XML is selected on the right side and then you can go through the names
I'm not sure if there's other files that also contain names and there's several sections. Not sure if you can search in there.
There's als a tool called XML Extractor for The Sims 4 at MTS. You can use that to extract all the game files and then open the one you need in a text editor and search there easier. Tool hasn't been updated in a while but still works well for me to extract files,
Maybe there's an easier way in S4Studio as well, I'm not an expert on the tool

Sims 4 studio will do it much easier as you mentioned. I've got dozens of mods I maintain and I always use it to extract the tuning files every patch, so I'm quite familiar with it.
To extract the tuning files all at once, Once the program is open and done indexing the files in the game. (This will happen again after every patch)
Select the "Tools" menu, then "Extract Tuning"
At the bottom of the new window, check only the "Use Subfolders" and "Extract All" boxes, and click on "Export"
You'll get a new window asking where to extract them to. It's best to choose a NEW EMPTY folder somewhere and let it go. It'll take a while to extract.
The files won't take up a lot of disk space, currently around 700 megs, but there will be a LOT of them, over 100,000. Once they are on your hard drive, you can search them at your leisure. Windows 10 has search features that will search the contents of all the files at once, that's how I do it. - crinrict5 years agoHero+@Psychotps Thanks. I always use the other tool to extract so I'm not very familiar with S4Studio.
Thank you BOTH SO MUCH! I really appreciate this!
I am currently extracting now so I will let you know if it works!
Again, really, thank you very much.
Just in case you both were wondering, it worked! I am sorry it took so long for me to get back here. I had work every day and just finally got the chance to take a look.
And also in case you're wondering, SHE CAN PLAY! Thank you thank you both for the help! :D

Hello! I'm glad to see this useful topic on the forums, and I've been able to successfully view the files. Does anyone know if there is a safe way to delete certain names without messing up the game? I don't want to replace them or download any mod/CC name lists, just delete some of the names listed.
The list seems to be organized by player language, each with an assigned number (example: <T name="language">4</T>).
I would like to figure out which number label corresponds to English (the language I play in) -- I've got some guesses but I don't want to waste time removing names for a language I don't use -- and whether or not I can safely remove certain names from my game. Thanks in advance!
