Which platform are you playing on, and what happens when you try to play with this specific family- do you see an error message?
It was due to me not knowing how scenario saves work, I suppose.
I'm on PC. It only happened when I tried to do a scenario - the normal house options were free when I did a normal save. Tried a scenario after starting a new save at the same cottage - new family is in there, no glitches when the player character interacts.
