Sim won't communicate

My Sim is only being given the option to discuss interests, tell a joke, or get to know someone, even though we have a full relationship bar. I'm not given any other options. This is not an issue when I play in the scenario board. In my play through, my Sim also won't interact with objects, not because something is in the way, but it doesn't even give me the option to click the item to interact, such as reading. Very frustrating.
