What is going on with this game? Confused new player

Thanks for the replies! I'm not really playing for any specific aspiration or challenge, I just want it to feel just a tiny bit realistic as I otherwise find it difficult to immerse myself into my character. I'll try the gameplay option for now and look into mods if I find it necessary :)
