One of my detectives turned vampire, and was fine even before buying potions and later sun resistance powers. Detective for the most part is an indoorsy career. You will get tasks like interrogating the current suspect, analyzing evidence, adding hints to the evidence chart, taking pictures of arrested sims, talk to the Chief, train for some time and so on, more than enough options to fill your daily progress gauge to at least two thirds (often fully). When you need to go to a crime scene, you will get teleported there. Then your vampire just needs to fly into the building and can teleport back to the police station after collecting evidence.
The only critical moments are these:
- Arrest a sim
This task will toss your vampire out into the open. She'll need to approach and chat up three potential culprits. If you have the Observant bonus trait, you'll be able to identify the guilty party quickly, then survive a short arresting animation and be back at the station for a refreshing Dark Meditation. It also helps that
For your promotions you'll need to solve a number of cases, so you will have to make the occasional arrest. But whenever no such goal is active, it is possible to stick to working inside the police station.
A mod such as MCCC that auto-pauses the game after a change of zone is very helpful here.
- The "Patrol 2 hours" task
You can usually avoid patroling and the related tasks. However, the game forces you to patrol in two instances:
The first time during the detective career tutorial (even sims with a degree have to go through this tutorial). Your vampire can go on patrol, and then immediately return to the police station to progress. She'll lose out on some work performance for the day, but stay safe.
The second time your sim gets forced to patrol is for their second promotion. Since your vampire will have a degree, she'll already be beyond that point, so it won't apply to her.
Sorry for the wall of text, tl;dr Your sim will be fine

Spoiler
the guilty suspect is always a freshly generated sim. So if you see two of your townies and a sim that you do not recognize at the arrest scene, you can swoop in and arrest the new sim.
