You could say that every Sims 4 pack is optional too. Or at least, that's what EA is saying. AGAIN. And NO. You can't have it both ways. There's a mod to travel in Sims 3? Well then, EA didn't make a complete game with the ability to travel between worlds - modders filled in the gaps.
Don't worry about TS5. I keep saying it, if you're so certain that EA is doing this all for profit (which it IS) then you can count on there not being a Sims 5. EA is appealing to more players by making Sims 4 ports. And DLC. It's more profitable.
It just irritates me something chronic when people talk like Sims 3 is a saint and EA's Store, with its exorbitant prices and mountains of reskins, was totally not a way to cash-grab that went on throughout the entirety of the game's duration just because it has some great gameplay items. It was just a DIFFERENT way to cash-grab. It's no shame to admit that EA was just as enthusiastic with its money-vacuum with Sims 3 as it is with Sims 4.
No DLC should have overlapping content. That goes for the bundles too - why should I pay for something I already have? Don't reduce the price - just don't double up the content and make different content for it instead! Look at Sims 3 Late Night and Sims 3 Supernatrual. Vampires were used TWICE. Why does everybody overlook that?
Actually I found the Sims 3 store a necessity because the rabbit hole careers and restaurants really irked me and the Sims 3 store offered open restaurants and bakeries and tea shops - the farmers market - the hands on glass blowing shop and jewelry shop and stained glass window making - among many other such things. One world offered all the toddler things simmers had been begging for like walkers and play pens. Another world offered a toy shop and toy making bench and a working merry-go-round carousel - another a pizzeria where my sims could get pizza, cal zones, breads etc. We got the farm, the cows, the chickens, the working tractor with hay rides, watering and fertilizing plants from the tractor - etc. We got the roller coaster and boardwalk games and booths in the store. So many things were in the store I needed - and back then there were no big sales on any new stuff - that Casino and Lucky Palms cost me 47 dollars - but I had to have it, Keep in mind I was real sick back then - fighting leukemia, and so I could not afford to wait. There was no complete your set back then - that came toward the end of the Sims 3 along with the read ads for free points came right before that. By then I already owned everything up to that point. But when you don't know if you will see 6 month ahead - you don't even consider waiting to buy anything.
So I don't regret any of it one bit - nor did I think of the cost at the time because having all those wonderful things for my game made it fun for me, gave me so much the game lacked, and took me through some of the worst time in my life. You call it a cash grab - I call it a blessing. It made me feel better - and believe me you cherish what makes you feel better when fighting Leukemia.
