I agree with @JoAnne65. No matter what the sims 3 did or didn't do (and still does) why it okay for the Sims 4 to do the same thing just using a different horse? It shouldn't be. What happened with My First Pet was a disgrace. I Know many don't agree and thats okay but this will just be the start.
That situation is not comparable to the Sims 3,2,1 or anything in the history. We have never had a product that relies on another to make it worth it. We have never had guru's saying before "We don't recommend you buy x unless you have y, but if you want it we can't stop you buying it" (lets be honest, they don't care. They have covered their backsides by making it crystal clear you need an expansion to be able to fully use every item in MFP. It's all over the trailer and as I've said straight from the horses mouths.
That is a first for this game. That cannot be denied or argued because its never happened before. Dlc for dlc is a new low for this iteration only and one I predict will happen again.
THIS!!!!! As if re-colors and re-meshes weren't enough of a blatant rip off of their own product...but DLC for DLC and hoping no one notices??? Yeah, that is scummy and low.
That is why everyone should be concerned. It will happen again, and it will get worse. No amount of DLC is going to fix what is wrong with EA's business practices and the game itself. We need a reboot.
Sims 4 actually was considered a reboot. It is no secret they informed us well before Sims 4 ever came out - we just choose not to see the message. It was their new vision - a remake of the Sims from the beginning with a new focus as if Sims 1-2- and 3 did not exist. They Maxis said it - and not every one paid attention. Most of us figured it would eventually get back on track even though the whole design of the game itself - and their engine made it clear it was a new sims series with little to do with it's former first 3 games. Maxis never tried to hide it - they told us before it came out - even let us pre-try the game before we bought it.
Remember Rachels blog - two plus months before the game came out. A Guru even called Sims 4 a Parallel Universe and it's version of the Sims. But people by and large just ignored all that.
I came to terms with it but not until we got Toddlers - they made enough difference to me that I could finally play the game. I just know better now than expecting a Sims 1-2-or 3 - and realize this is not those Sims games. I can still play those if I like and also play this parallel Universe. LOL.
4 years of bickering over the direction of this game has not changed it - its very design alone makes change improbable.
The problem for the sims 4 is largely the sims 2 and 3 exist. They can say its not a direct sequel, its a soap opera etc but as long as its got the number 4 on it and sells popular concepts from its previous titles in dlc I don't think it does a good job of standing on its own two feet.
To me, the producers acting like the game is a first for the series is nothing more than distraction and an attempt to explain the very basic things that were left out at launch. Like pools, ghosts, trash compactors, dish washers, doorbells, school buses and toddlers. Defending it by saying "Its a remake of the sims and lets pretend its a parallel universe" was a way to defend the emptiness of the game. To me its like Rockstar bringing out a new Grand Theft Auto and ignoring the franchises history and toning the game down with no crime, no story, no side missions and turning the game into a pixel art style game whilst slapping the GTA logo on the front and expecting fans to accept its in its own time parallel.
EA can pretend all they like this game is a parallel universe and exists in its own time frame but this is a game with history and try as they may, they cannot just pretend the sims 1-3 didn't happen (but I bet they wish fans could forget!)
The best games are the ones that acknowledge their roots, their history and their fans that have been there since the beginning whilst looking for ways to bring new experiences and new content to the franchise. You can't just wipe the fourteen years success the previous games had. Without them there would be no sims 4.
Well they made it pretty darn clear it was a parallel Universe going back to the beginning of the Sims well before the game came out - and people still bought it even after getting a free trial to try the game. It was not something they just sprang on us with no notice. Believe me - I bought it too thinking the game would come around and be a sims game I recognized - it took 3 years almost for me to enjoy it at all. When toddlers came out I did not even have 250 hours into the game - during 3 years - I was back playing Sims 2 and 3. Then I got the notice for EA - toddlers were out....
But its not the fans fault, I kind of feel you are hinting that its peoples fault for not understanding their vision? I don't remember them saying anything about a parallel universe. I remember them saying they were going back to their roots. I don't argue their vision is completely different to previous versions- that much is clear. But its not the fans fault if they don't like this vision. My Husband is a game developer for a triple A gaming company and he is working on a sequel at the moment - if it were to fail, he is not going to blame the fans for not understanding their vision, the blame will fall to them for not understanding their fanbase.
Can I ask? So before toddlers you didn't like the sims 4. Fair enough. Toddlers come out and now its flipped the game on its head for you? But isn't it the same game toddlers or not? The vision for the game hasn't changed. Toddlers are brilliant but they cannot carry a game on their cute little shoulders. The flaws with the game are still there but the only thing that has changed is a new life state.
