I feel your pain.
The Sims 4 is not a bad game, but it's very expensive to play this game over other versions. I had to figure out what I wanted to play and what packs to avoid. I thought about the Supernaturals being split apart and I knew that a witch and werewolf GP would be ones I would be willing to pay extra to get. I love mermaids, but I can't see paying another $20 for them.
We are being forced to pick and choose what we buy and that makes each players experience unique. The idea becomes a problem when we are shaping the game based on money, instead of personal taste.
Funny because for me there in fact lies the problem: playing Sims 4 isn’t a unique experience for each player. Sure, if you don’t buy everything you won’t be able to go bowling for instance like another simmer can (but the same goes when I don’t buy University for Sims 3 and that pack adds even more unique experiences), but other than that the problem with the way they have designed those packs is that everyone’s game is identical. So I don’t even see an advantage there. “My sim has a rodent” - “Oh, mine doesn’t because I didn’t buy that pack” doesn’t qualify as unique experience for me.
I completely agree. Splitting up content into jigsaw puzzle pieces and offering people that instead of selling them the whole jigsaw doesn't make your game experience unique. Give players the tools and let them be the captain of their own ships and decide what makes their game unique. My game doesn't feel more unique than yours because I have packs that you don't have. If you had those packs you would have the exact same linear experience.
That is what packs do - is give you tools to make your experience different. You cannot tell me the experience is the same - I have 31 other family members who are simmers and believe me the packs - even the sps makes a big difference - as much as our playing style make a difference - and why simmers often like mods and CC which also make their games different. Take the school mods - players with that had visual school play for their sims kids - I do not have because I choose to not use mods or CC in a developing game (I would love Maxis to make a gp like that mod as I have no problem with paying 20 bucks to have that in my developing game. If mods and CC didn't need constant updates and Maxis could apply fixes for them when they create issues in a game, then sure who would not chose the free route to get that experience in their game. New content DOES change a game very much - because if it made no difference there would be no point in CC or mod creators creating designs and new mechanics for the game any more than Maxis creating packs etc. Why would people feel their game was lacking when they don't have Seasons, or University, or even cars - even if the cars are without much purpose - Simmers want that content and that experience - and only the simmers that own those packs (or mods) has that experience.
Having a small pet in the game is a new experience you don't have - whether you admit it or not. Maybe if you are one who does n ot desire that content and experience in your game - then of course even owning it will not change your experience if you do not use it. But if it does not exist at all and you are a player that likes that kind of thing - you don't even have the option of having that experience.
To me someone elses principles in believing it is wrong for us to have this pack is not a good enough reason to not own the pack, nor is it a good enough reason to force Maxis hand into not repeating this kind of thing. People who had no need for the pack - well they did not have to buy it. I worry that uproars over packs some people don't like does influence what content we get in the future - and because some people didn't like something then the rest of us that did like the thing or idea gets denied the chance to have more of the same.
When a pack does not exist - nor do the tools to use and experience what that pack my have offered to your game.
Creators cannot create in a game with out packs that give them tools to create. That is a fact - ask any world creator how many sims 4 worlds can they create? Their Sims experience is very different than mine because they are creators with no tools to play the Sims game the way they play the sims game.
