As one of the people who was 12-15 when ts4 released and is still on the younger end of things, I don't appreciate the games direction. Having this based on age is kind of flimsy. I still have to pay the money for new content like everyone else I still have an interest in getting more content per pack. Plus the Sims lasts a while so the audience moves on when it tries to hard to always aim younger.
If making games for "older" audiences means getting more depth, I first find that a little insulting (I like to think I'm smart, don't ruin it for me), and second as a "younger person" I prefer games made for "older people". I honestly do hope that nobody thinks all young people like ts4. I'm sure many do but I know many that don't just like I know many older people who are fine with it.
I personally think what one thinks of this marketing scheme, and ts4 in general, comes down to world view, which is shaped by age, but is also impacted by tons of other things. (Location, income, social groups, other hobbies, how one was raised etc.)
I also would like to say, one of the most annoying things a company, or any individual, can do imo is group all "young people" together and then try to market to us based on some popular trend or somthing. It also doesn't work well, when you go trendy your game is often dated with in two years I find.
That's just my thoughts since everyone has suddenly brought up the age thing. Which by the way is kind of weird to read, it's like everyone is talking about you while your sitting in the room. :D :D :)
Although I might be dubbed old by society or something, cause I don't feel like I fit anything anyone has said about younger people. Except having to watch my money carefully, my cat is rather prone to eating paper :expressionless: plum thing.
I agree with you. But there isn’t really anything new in this. I started in the Danish Sims 2 forum in 2004 and saw 14 yrs olds discuss if they hadn’t become too old to still play Sims games. They did. But they already found the Sims games a little too childish for them to play.
The Danish Sims 2 forum was dominated by two groups:
1. 10-14 yrs olds who discussed both the game and other things.
2. At least 25 yrs old simmers who mainly only discussed the game.
So I wondered where the 16-24 yrs olds were? Maybe there were one or two of them who a few times visited the forum too. But generally they weren’t there at all.
This changed when we switched to the Sims 3 forum because even though the 10-14 yrs olds also attempted to get into this forum they hadn’t been successful. A small group of them managed to get in anyway though but told us that they only succeeded by lying about their age. They didn’t like to have to do that and they just disappeared from the forum again.
But generally I don’t agree that all games are targeted at the future young adults because there are huge differences. The Sims games are mainly targeted at newcomers who buy the games and packs out of curiosity. Therefore they don’t have much depth but mainly just a few things that at first look very interesting but become boring after way too short time.
Many other games are instead M rated or even A rated and targeted at older competitive gamers who want to train and beat both the game and other gamers. The fans for those games are mainly 18-25 yrs old. But all games can be played by all age groups.
The only reason why we haven’t seen this in the US forum too is IMO that the US forum never has allowed the younger simmers to post their exact age like the Danish Sims forums always have.
