What if they simply add a new life stage between newborn and toddler, and reduce the object baby stage to something like 6 sim hours on Normal life span? Are you willing to accept object babies for half a day (or less) to get 2-3 sim days (normal lifespan) with free babies?
This seems like a perfectly acceptable solution to me, especially since we can age up manually at any time we want. So if you wanted to skip straight to the interesting babies, you could. I've always kind of expected that this is how it would be done if it's done.
What if freeing the babies breaks saves? Are you willing to start over?
No. I would be extremely angry and never update again, unless they fixed this somehow. Nothing they could possibly do to improve babies would ever outweigh my existing stories for me.
What if freeing the babies just deletes all existing babies in your save?
This does not seem like a good solution, because no matter how much warning they give to age your existing babies up before updating, there will still be a lot of players who never get that message. Not everyone who plays the sims hangs out online in places where the game news is discussed. There would have to be an actual warning before the update starts and an option to cancel the update. But I doubt they'd bother to do that. So I think this option is dangerous and not good.
