Laptop is actually only a year old, just not a gaming one. I can play fairly smoothly on medium settings with laptop mode off actually, the default was low but I could not stand how it looked. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it currently runs and I do not want to mess that up too much. I have an integrated graphics card and I think that is where I worry. New or not those are not good for gaming.
